Why he might be annoying:

He tried to shave six years off his age, claiming 1922 as his year of birth.
He was 52 when ‘On the Buses’ started, but the character he portrayed was supposed to be in his mid-30s.
He said, ‘Whatever I did after On the Buses, nobody wanted to know about it.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Lilian Flavell for 63 years until her death.
He served in the Royal Engineers during World War II.
Early in his career, he and Benny Hill were partners in a stage act (with Hill serving as the straight man).
After retiring from acting because of failing health, he painted landscapes, many of which were good enough to be exhibited in London.
