Poet

The Resume

    (March 16, 1892-April 15, 1938)
Born in Santiago de Chuco, Peru
Poetry collections include ‘The Black Messengers’ (1919), ‘Trilce’ (1922), ‘Spain, Take This Chalice From Me’ (published posthumously, 1939), and ‘Human Poems’ (1939)

Why he might be annoying:

He was fired from a teaching post at a private school after refusing to marry a woman he was conducting an affair with (1920).
He went into exile in Europe after being jailed for three months for looting a merchant’s house and setting it on fire (1920-21).
He joined the French Communist Party (1931) and participated in an International Congress of Writers Solidarity to show support for the Soviet Union (1934).
He wrote five plays, none of which were staged or published in his lifetime.
His children’s book ‘Paco Yunque’ was rejected by his publisher as being too violent for children.

Why he might not be annoying:

He became politically radicalized after his sister was raped by a powerful landowner.
The charges that sent him into exile were essentially trumped up and the result of a local political feud.
The Judiciary of Peru posthumously exonerated him, declaring that he had been ‘unjustly accused.’ (2007)
After its posthumous publication, ‘Paco Yunque’ became required reading in Peruvian schools.
He was described by Thomas Merton as ‘the greatest universal poet since Dante.’
