They were hippies.
They experimented with drugs.
They weren't known very well outside of their hometown of Detroit.
They celebrated the holy trinity (sex, drugs, and rock & roll) into excess.
Their manager, Sinclair, was known as the 'King of the Hippies' in Detroit and was the founder of the White Panther Party, a political faction espousing 'total assault on the culture by any means necessary, including rock & roll, dope, and fucking in the streets.'
They debuted with a live album.

Why they might not be annoying:

It must've been damn cool to live in Detroit with them and the Stooges being in that area.
They helped form punk and garage rock.
