Why he might be annoying:

He overly enunciated every syllable.
He had tons of liver spots.
He was over 90 and refused to step down and give someone else a job.
Yankee travelling secretary Rick Cerrone did a perfect imitation of him, so that when he was unable to attend a few games he filled in for him. The Yankees did not inform the stadium crowd, so as not to disappoint those attending the game.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was famed for his clear and correct speech pattern.
He was a professor of speech and only accepted his position when he was assured he could keep his teaching position.
Well into his 90's, he still worked for the Yankees, Giants and taught.
His microphone is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He earned his BA at St. Johns and his masters at Columbia University.
