The Resume

    (January 8, 1934-January 10, 2004)
    Born in Charleston, South Carolina
    Birth name was Alexandra Baird
Best known for writing 'Scarlett' (1991) the sequel to 'Gone with the Wind'
Also wrote 'Who's the Lady in the President's Bed' (1972), 'Charleston' (1981), 'On Leaving Charleston' (1984), 'The Time Returns' (1985), 'New Orleans Legacy' (1987), 'From Fields of Gold' (1994) and 'A Love Divine' (1996)

Why she might be annoying:

Growing up in Charleston, she sold maps to Rhett Butler's grave to gullible tourists.
'Gone with the Wind' author Margaret Mitchell never wanted her novel to have a sequel, feeling that she had given the story a 'natural and proper ending.'
While writing 'Scarlett,' she went on strike for four months to protest editing decisions by the publisher.
'Scarlett' was almost universally panned by the critics. (An example from the Los Angeles Times: 'Ripley's book ranks several miles below serious literature and only a few inches above the cookie-cutter offerings from Harlequin.')

Why she might not be annoying:

She said about the restrictions placed on 'Scarlett' by Mitchell's nephews (such as no graphic sex), 'They were gentlemen. I am a lady. We had no disagreements.'
She anticipated the critical reaction, saying 'I am trying to prepare myself for a universal hatred of what I'm going to do.'
Despite the bad reviews, 'Scarlett' became the best-selling novel of the year.
