Series was preceded by three made-for-TV movies (1992-93) and followed by another pair (2002)

Why Diagnosis: Murder might be annoying:

Dr. Mark Sloan was originally widowed with no children when he first appeared in a 1991 'Jake and the Fatman' episode.
The made-for-television movies had characters being portrayed by actors different from the actual series.
It gave another acting job to Scott Baio.
The idea behind most mysteries is that the victim appears to have died from an accident when in reality, it was actually a homicide.
Despite being set in Colorado, the television films were shot in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The show's setting moved from Colorado to Los Angeles after the first season.
Aside from Barry Van Dyke, nepotism was clearly evident in the series since many episodes featured Dick Van Dyke's relatives including his brother Jerry and his grandson Shane.
Many episodes featured crossovers or references to other CBS series that were concurrently airing during its run.
After the first three seasons were released on DVD between 2006 and 2007, the remainder of the series was not released on the format until 2013.
It is a mash up of 'Matlock,' Murder, She Wrote,' 'Columbo,' and 'Perry Mason.'

Why Diagnosis: Murder might not be annoying:

It revived Dick Van Dyke's career.
It lasted on the air three years longer than Dick's <12466>other major starring vehicle<12466>.
Some 'Dick Van Dyke' show regulars made guest appearances on this show.
It featured a plethora of guest stars including several ones from older detective/legal/spy drams.
Andy Griffith and Mike Connors appeared on two episodes as their respective titular characters from 'Matlock' and 'Mannix.'
Several other actors such as Melissa Joan Hart got their start or appeared on the series before becoming famous.
It inspired other shows with similar premises such as 'Monk' and 'Psych.'
