The Resume

    (September 20, 1977-September 13, 1982)
    Aired on CBS
Spin-off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Premise: After being fired from WJM-TV, Lou Grant gets a job as city editor for the Los Angeles Tribune
    Cast:
    Ed Asner as Lou Grant
    Robert Walden as Joe Rossi
    Linda Kelsey as Billie Newman
    Mason Adams as Charles Hume
    Jack Bannon as Art Donovan
Daryl Anderson as Dennis 'Animal' Price
Nancy Marchand as Margaret Jones Pynchon

Why Lou Grant might be annoying:

None of the other regular characters from 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' appeared or were even referred to.
It never finished in the Nielsen top 20, despite having (starting in its second season) a strong lead-in from M*A*S*H.
CBS was rumored to have cancelled the show partly because of Ed Asner's increasing outspokenness for liberal causes.
NBC considered picking up the series, but network chair Grant Tinker decided the show was 'a little tired.'
The producers wanted to do a final show in which the Tribune goes out of business and interviewed reporters from real newspapers that had closed in preparation, but they were never given the chance to film it.

Why Lou Grant might not be annoying:

It is a rare (if not unique) example of a successful drama spun off from a successful comedy.
It did have one crossover from 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show': Mary's aunt Flo, who had put down Lou for slumming in TV, congratulated him on getting back into 'real' journalism (while implying that the Tribune was not the most respectable of newspapers).
Its coverage of ethical issues in the newspaper business would often be discussed by students and teachers in journalism classes.
In addition to several Emmys, it won a Peabody Award and two Humanitas Prizes.
