Songwriter
    (October 27, 1939- )
    Born in Spiro, Oklahoma
    Raised in Bakersfield, California
Compositions performed by George Jones (‘Beneath Still Waters’ and ‘If My Heart Had Windows’), Jack Greene (‘There Goes My Everything’), and Charley Pride (‘All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)’),
Own singles include ‘Space Command,’ ‘Alley-Oop,’ ‘Elvira’ (yes, that one), ‘My Woman Up’t and Gone,’ ‘California Cotton Fields,’ ‘Big Mabel Murphy,’ and ‘My Baby Packed Up My Mind and Left Me’
1976 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee
    His middle name? June.
Besides relocating with the family to be raised in the new area’s cotton fields, he was actually born near the end of the third stage of the Dust Bowl.
Many of the singles he himself recorded weren’t indicated to be on any albums.
‘Alley-Oop’ would become a bigger hit for the Hollywood Argyles than it was for him (not the only time something like that happened).
He would master several musical instruments before his teenage years.
Having won a talent contest hosted by him, he would be signed – on the verge of his teens – to Ferlin Husky’s road show.
He became a staff songwriter for Jim Reeves’ publishing company — and the rest was history.
Between 1966 and 1971, he had four solo albums under his belt.
He would go on to become a Christian minister and pastor, not to return to the music scene for some 18 years.
