Politician

The Resume

    (July 26, 1858-March 28, 1938)
    Born in Houston, Texas
    American businessman and politician
Adviser and confidante of President Woodrow Wilson
Author of 'Phillip Dru: Administrator' the story of a politician who seizes power in the United States, imposes what was essentially the platform of the Bull Moose Party and disappears

Why he might be annoying:

He was largely forgotten until Godfrey Hodgson's 2006 biography, 'Woodrow Wilson's Right Hand: The Life of Colonel Edward M. House.'
He used the title 'Colonel' although he never served in the military.
He sold his enormous farmlands in Texas to become a banker in New York.
He supported America's entry into WWI.
    His middle name was Mandell.
He helped write the armistice ending WWI, the constitution of the League of Nations, and Wilson's Fourteen Points, and we know how well they all turned out.
He published 'Phillip Dru: Administrator' anonymously.
The ending of 'Phillip Dru' with the unexplained disappearance of Dru is widely disliked.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had to quit college and take over the family farms when his father died.
He was personally honest and no type of financial or sexual scandal was ever attached to his name.
He was so trusted by Wilson that when he was elected Wilson offered him any cabinet post he wanted (except State which was already promised to William Jennings Bryan). He turned them all down.
Due to his influence with Wilson (he lived in the White House for most of Wilson's presidency), he has been called 'one of the most important men of the twentieth century.'
'Phillip Dru: Administrator' preceded by decades the brilliant exposes of 20th century dictatorship by Orwell and Huxley and was in many ways more prescient.
With 'Phillip Dru' he exposed populism as being as dangerous to democracy as violent revolution.
