Why she might be annoying:

The New York Times noted that her roles were 'rarely glamorous.'
She was typecast as mothers, but never had children in real life.
She began portraying the mother of grown adults in her 20s.

Why she might not be annoying:

During a World War II USO tour, she survived a plane crash in Papua New Guinea and camped several days in the jungle until rescuers arrived.
She was offered a movie studio contract, but only on the condition that she have a nose job and get her jaw straightened.
She refused, and later commented, 'I can't believe I had the wisdom.... I know people who did that surgery and they all looked alike.'
She won a Tony (1972) and two Obies (1979,1986) for her stage performances.
Tennessee Williams said, 'She gives her all to her parts and I have loved her in everything I've seen.'
