Why he might be annoying:

There are conflicting reports as to the exact year of his birth.
He was a passionate gambler in real life.
As a result, he often found himself losing very big sums of money.
It probably also explains his participation in movies which were not really worth his presence.
Not only was he divorced, but he was married to two different women at one point!
He then started a 'double family style of life' with double lunches during festivities and big stress.
For example, on Christmas and New Year's Eve, he used to set the clocks back two hours in one wife's house so that he could make a toast at midnight with both families.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a pioneer in the neo-realistic film movement.
His films covered very socially taboo and controversial topics for his time.
His films 'Shoeshine' and 'The Bicycle Thief' were met with such acclaim, he was acknowledged with two Honorary Oscars for foreign language film.
His films challenged other filmmakers to enter deeper into more socially conscious themes.
