    Named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to sport (1980)

Why he might be annoying:

    He began skating in second-hand girls’ skates painted black.
    He left school at sixteen to concentrate on skating.
    He starred in and directed an ‘on ice’ adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Starlight Express’ that closed halfway during its scheduled tour, having failed to attract enough of an audience (1997).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He succeeded despite having been told that he was too tall and his feet were too big.
    He had the unusual talent of being able to spin both clockwise and counterclockwise.
    He set a world record for longest back flip on ice skates at 18 feet (1983).
