Why he might be annoying:

He has the most unfortunate name in race history this side of Dick Trickle.
His rain shortened 1973 Indy victory is remembered for tragedy. He said: 'It was just a race that everybody wanted to get over with and go home and forget about it.' (the post-race banquet was canceled)
A driver (Art Pollard) died during time trials.
Popular driver Swede Savage was involved in a horrific crash that left him in critical condition and led to his death a month later. Savage's accident also injured a dozen spectators.
A pit crewman died after being struck by a fire truck trying to render aid.
He came in 3rd twice at Indy (1976, 1978).
He had a wide lead in the 1977 Indy and was expected to win when his crankshaft broke on lap 186.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won 25 national championship events sanctioned by either USAC or CART between 1965 and 1983.
Because of the 1973 Indy events, new safety changes were implemented.
He was reluctant to get close to other drivers after the event, but overcame it and remained a popular competitor.
He won the most exciting Indy, holding off a late surge by Rick Mears, by .16 of a second (1982).
At the time it was the closest finish in Indy history.
He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame (2002).
Since the induction he ranks just 3rd behind A.J. Foyt and Al Unser in Indy miles driven (7,895), and tied for 4th in total starts.
