Hit a career record 23 grand slams
Baseball triple crown (most home runs, RBIs and batting average in the league for the year - 1934)
Average 147 RBIs and 138.8 runs scored per season* (*-154 game season)
    Nickname was 'Iron Horse'
Batted in the prestigious clean up position through out most of his career, with Babe Ruth batting before him
    Yankees retired his number (#4)
The movie 'Pride of the Yankee' was based on his life
In honor of his day the Yankees began the tradition of an annual old timers game (July 4, 1939)
    First Yankee captain
Elected to the Hall of Fame by special election (1939)
First modern baseball player to hit four home runs in a game
    Died at thirty-seven of ALS

Why he might be annoying:

Although not preachy, he did not get along with teammate, Babe Ruth.
He felt Ruth abused his celebrity status and was not a good role model.
Ruth disliked Gehrig and would refer to him as a mama's boy.
However, with tears in their eyes they embraced and forgot their past problems (July 4, 1939).

Why he might not be annoying:

In his honor, he was the first ball player to have his uniform number retired.
He had a workman's attitude and was truly a role model.
Unlike other ball players, he never used profanity, drank or smoked.
He played every game in more than 13 seasons, despite 17 different hand fractures, a broken thumb, a broken toe and painful back spasms during that time span.
When he was forced to retire, due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, now known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), the Yankees honored him with a special day (July 4, 1939).
His speech of over 60 years ago at Yankee Stadium, that caused most spectators to cry openly, is still chilling to many.
Knowing that ALS ended his career (and will end his life) prematurely, he said: 'I've been given some bad breaks, but today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.'
    He graduated Columbia University.
    He was left handed.
