Why he might be annoying:

    He wore loud pants at tournaments.
    He gave all the players nicknames. ('Fraulein Forehand' for Stefi Graf, 'The Sledgehammer Sisters' for Venus and Serena Williams, etc.)
    When he was tennis coach and Brandeis University, his outstanding student was Abbie Hoffman.
    At his last Wimbledon for NBC, he asked Roger Federer if he was looking forward to the US Open at 'Forest Lawn.' (The Open is played at Forest Hills; Forest Lawn is a cemetary.)

Why he might not be annoying:

    Although he called himself a 'hacker,' he was an accomplished tennis player, having won the US Indoor Mixed Doubles championship (1961).
    NBC fired him after 35 years by leaving him a voicemail.
    At ESPN he reteamed with former partner Dick Enberg.
    He won the Red Smith Award for contributions to sports journalism (1999).
