    (January 1, 1888-February 16, 1974)
    Born in St. Remi, Canada
Creator of the M-1 Garand rifle used by the US military during WWII
He received no compensation for his rifle although the company he was working for made millions.
When Congress attempted to pass a bill granting him a pittance of 100,000, it was voted down.
Although he designed his rifle well before the start of WWII, much of the US military was still using bolt action WWI Springfield rifles when America joined the war.
Although he was Canadian, his rifle was not adopted by the Canadian Army.
His rifle was far, far, superior to the rifles used by any other military during WWII, contributed hugely to the Allied victory, saved countless American lives, and was described by General Patton as the finest battle weapon ever devised.
He had to quit school at age 12 to go to work in a factory to help support his family.
He didn't get any money for his invention but did receive the Medal for Meritorious Service and the Medal of Merit and the grateful thanks of a nation.
After the M-1 was phased out after the Korean War, it was replaced by the M-14 which was also based on his design (he didn't get any money for it either).
