    Born in San Francisco, California
    Known for his black and white photos of the American West, especially Yosemite Park
    Member of the Sierra Club
    At age four, his nose was broken during the San Francisco earthquake, was never set correctly, and remained crooked all his life.
    He was expelled from several schools for his hyperactivity.
    After his marriage, he and his wife moved in with his parents to reduce expenses.
    His family made their money in the lumber industry that he would later condemn.
    Critic Abigail Foerstner wrote that he 'did for the national parks what Homer's epics did for Odysseus.'
    He published the photo collection 'Born Free and Equal' to protest the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.
    He held annual workshops, teaching photography to thousands of students.
    He was married to Virginia Best for 54 years until his death.
    He said, 'I believe in beauty. I believe in stones and water, air and soil, people and their future.'
