He was idealistic.
After college graduation, he hitchhiked across the United States to 'find himself.'
For his final journey into Alaska's wilderness, he took 10 pounds of rice, ammunition, a hunting rifle and camping equipment.
He possessed little knowledge of how to survive in the wild.
Other young people journeyed to Alaska after finding out about his story.

Why he might not be annoying:

In 1990, he graduated from Emory University.
He refused his Phi Beta Kappa membership feeling such honors were irrelevant.
He donated his life savings to OXFAM, an organization which fights poverty and injustice.
His corpse wasn't discovered until 2 weeks after he died.
