His Smiley was first put on lapel pins.
Hippies wore his smiley patches on their clothing and VW buses.
His creation is what sparked Wal-Mart Greeters to slap a smilie on their customers.
His smiley became too commercialized.
Two dots and a line in a circle made him a wealthy man.
He was displeased with the overuse of his creation.
Since his original spelling of smiley with the suffix 'ey,' people have changed it's suffix to 'ie' and 'ly.'
The over used cliché 'Have A Nice Day!' was tacked to his creation.

Why he might not be annoying:

His smiley creation is the symbol of peace and happiness.
He created the smiley for a company that was in need of a morale boost.
He created the smiley in 1963 and by the end of the '60's the smiley had made it's way around the world.
His smiley continues to be the reason new smilies are created everyday for internet forums.
His smiley still sparks smiley creations in people.
His creation makes your day brighter.
His Smiley does not discriminate against age, race, sex, religion or geography.
His purpose of 'World Smile Corporation' is to create, market and license products featuring his signature smiley that no one else uses.
All after tax profits of his smiley corporations go to children's charities worldwide.
'World Smile Day' encourages schools, businesses and general public to recognize random acts of kindness and make one person smile.
