Outfielder for the Kansas City Royals (1977-81), Cincinnati Reds (1982), New York Mets (1983, 1985, 1987) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1986)
Manager of the Colorado Rockies (April 2002-June 2009) and Pittsburgh Pirates

He failed to live up to his draft billing.
He was a journeyman player.
He has been married twice.
He played three separate stints with the Mets between 1983 and 1987.
He, along with the Rockies front office have been accused of encouraging Christianity in the clubhouse.
He banned men's magazines and music with objectional lyrics from being played in the clubhouse.

He was instrumental in the development of players such as Jason Jennings, Matt Holliday and Todd Helton.
He was named a coach for the National League team at the 2004 All-Star Game.

He guided the Rockies to the best record in franchise history in his fifth full season as manager.
He guided the team to its first playoff appearance in twelve years by winning a tiebreaker game for the NL Wild Card (2007).
