Fictional Character

The Resume

Mythical rabbit created to coincide with Easter Sunday
Eostre, a pre-Christian goddess, said to be the deity behind the origin - eggs being a worldwide symbol of fertility
Developed by German Protestants retaining the Catholic custom of eating colored eggs for Easter (eggs laid during the fast were stored until the Easter feast)
18th century German immigrants in the U.S., occupying the Pennsylvania Dutch region introduced kids of the existence of 'Osterhase' (aka 'Oschter Haws'), or 'Easter Bunny'

Why Easter Bunny might be annoying:

Eostre was said to have turned her pet bird into a bunny to entertain kids, who laid brightly colored eggs that were handed out to them (what strange behavior).
An egg-laying bunny? (and they look suspiciously like hen eggs, so they might be stolen)
The rabbit is said to be a product of 'fakelore' (an urban myth), which is inauthentic, made-up folklore.
Though usually referred to as 'he,' the sex of the rabbit has never been officially established (egg-laying would suggest female, and Easter Bunny costumes suggest sexual ambiguity).
Spoilsports in Australia, where rabbits are considered feral pests, have lobbied to replace him with an Easter Bilby (a native marsupial).
Sometimes the rabbit hides eggs so well they're not found right away, and in no condition to be eaten when they turn up.
Some religious purists claim the rabbit mocks the true spirit of Easter and its celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection (like Santa Claus stealing his birthday spotlight).

Why Easter Bunny might not be annoying:

Even though he's a rabbit, he doesn't breed like one, which makes him a true, one-of-a-kind, special bunny.
Non-Christian households have bought into the Easter tradition as a non-sectarian festival, like Halloween and St. Valentine's Day.
Bugs Bunny took over for him in the cartoon classic 'Easter Yeggs (1947).'
Unlike the Trix Rabbit, he is industrious, NOT silly.
Rankin and Bass created 'The Easter Bunny Is Comin' to Town (1977),' with Fred Astaire as the narrator.
There have been no documented reports from disgruntled homeowners over bunny 'accidents' on carpeting.
At some point in history, chocolate, jelly beans and peeps were added to the consumer equation to give folks something more than eggs to nibble on.
This bunny brings joy to many a child (except the ones who get bellyaches from overindulging, but that's their own fault).
