He financed his films through product placement.
Many critics complained that his lushly romantic films have a certain sameness.
Late in his career, he noted, 'A film by Claude Lelouch — one more — that doesn’t interest anyone, I’m afraid.'

Why he might not be annoying:

As Jews in occupied France, he and his father survived using fake papers.
At 16, he made a short documentary about daily life in the Soviet Union, which he secretly filmed by hiding the camera under his coat.
'A Man and a Woman' won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
He said, 'I'm in love with life. Every morning I'm amazed to see the sun coming up and that is what I try to transmit in my films.'
