Religious Figure

The Resume

    (September 26, 1944- )
    Born in Concordia, Kansas
    Catholic priest and bishop
Ordained a priest in the Catholic Church in 1970, consecrated the bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota in 1988, installed as Archbishop of Denver, Colorado in 1997, and the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2011
Education: BA in Philosophy from Saint Fidelis College, MA in Religious Education from Capuchin College, and MA in Theology from the University of San Francisco
Member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (Franciscans)
Known for his ability to energize a diocese, intelligence, fighting for religious freedom and against bigotry and anti-semitism and helping the poor
Wrote the books; 'Living the Catholic Faith: Rediscovering the Basics,' and 'Rendering Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life'

Why he might be annoying:

    He's a disinterested administrator.
His 'typically blunt style' puts some people off.
He was accused, not entirely fairly, of being more concerned with protecting the Church than bringing bad priests to justice during the pedophilia scandals of the early 2000's.

Why he might not be annoying:

He's only the second Native American to become a bishop in the United States.
He's one of the very few men to have led three dioceses in the history of the Catholic Church.
He's been a major success as a bishop wherever he has been installed.
He started the Archdiocese of Denver's own seminary, and by the time he left Denver to serve in Philadelphia fully half of Denver's priests were graduates of it.
He works very hard to help the poor and once said, 'If we don't love the poor, and do all we can to improve their lot, we're going to Hell.'
His motto as a bishop has been 'As Christ Loved His Church' (Ephesians 5:25).
Even his detractors grant him a formidable intellect and great communication skills.
He's a major sports fan and looks forward to going to sporting events.
He stands up for what he believes.
Even those who criticize his handling of the priestly pedophilia scandals don't claim he was personally involved.
