Why they might be annoying:

They were put together after Brown’s previous backing band walked out in a pay dispute.
They had a lot of personnel turnover over the years.
They recorded under a bunch of other names, including the New J.B.’s, J.B.’s International, Maceo and the Macks, the First Family, the Last Word, the James Brown Soul Train and the Above Average Black Band (a joking reference to the Average White Band).
’Doing It To Death’ was their only song to cross over to the pop Top 40.

Why they might not be annoying:

They played an important role in Brown’s early 70s transition to heavier, groove-oriented funk.
’Doing It To Death’ topped the Billboard R&B singles chart and was certified gold with over a millions copies sold.
Several band members would join George Clinton’s P-Funk crew.
