Why he might be annoying:

    He was a small and delicate man, nicknamed 'Il Piccolito' ('The Little Man').
    At the insistence of his father, he got a law degree before studying for the priesthood.
    He was a cardinal for only three months before being elected Pope.
    His attempts to mediate a peace settlement during World War I were rejected by both sides.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During World War I, he focused on humanitarian efforts such as prisoner exchanges and food deliveries to occupied countries.
    He was open to modernization, saying 'Let us live in the present and not in history.'
    He was known for his generosity.
    Pope Benedict XVI called him 'that courageous prophet of peace who guided the church through turbulent times of war.'
