Why Gunsmoke might be annoying
James Arness and Milburn Stone are the only two actors to stay with the show its entire 20-year run.
It did not cast William Conrad (who played the role of Matt Dillon on the radio show) because of his obesity.
Some believe the radio show version was more realistic as it was aimed towards adult listeners and had more explicit content.
It is the subject of an NES video game.
It forced Gilligan's Island off the air when it moved from Saturdays to Mondays.
It survived well after the western fad had ended.
Why Gunsmoke might not be annoying
It survived the initial purging of rural programs by CBS during the 1970s.
When it was going to be cancelled in its fifteenth, viewer response was so dramatic that it was even mentioned in Congress.
It was Lady Bird Johnson's favorite show.
The first episode of the show has John Wayne personally introducing the series and its star, James Arness.
It holds the record for the longest-running prime-time television drama at 20 years and 633 episodes.
