    Growing up, he frequently lived with relatives, on the streets, or in the woods to avoid his alcoholic parents.
    He completed the 1,100-mile Iditarod sled dog race (1983).
    He said he writes for children because 'they're still open to new ideas.'
    A teacher said, 'If I have a kid who is a reluctant reader, all I have to do is hand him one of Gary Paulsen's books.'
