Racist

The Resume

    (July 5, 1874-July 9, 1967)
    Born in Karlsruhe, Germany
German anthropologist & professor of medicine
Pioneer in the field of racial eugenics
Director of the Anatomical Institute in Freiburg
Founded the Society for Race Hygiene in Freiburg (1908)
Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics (1927-1942)
Appointed rector of the Frederick William University in Berlin by Adolf Hitler in 1933
Officially joined the Nazi Party in 1940
Wrote 'Foundations of Human Hereditary Teaching and Racial Hygiene' (1921-1932), 'Human Heredity Theory and Racial Hygiene' (1936), 'The Rehoboth Bastards and the Problem of Miscegenation among Humans' (1913), 'The Aboriginal Races of India' (1954), and 'Begegnungen mit Toten: aus den Erinnerungen eines Anatomen' (1959)

Why he might be annoying:

He heavily influenced Dr. Josef Mengele.
He was accused of downplaying complicity in the Nazis' Genocidal policies in his memoirs.
His writings also provided a template for sections of 'Mein Kampf.'
No 'Eugen' did not invent the term 'Eugenics' (just a creepy coincidence...)
He referred to mixed-race Africans as 'Rehoboth bastards' of nature.
He was an advocate of forced sterilization of blacks (policies which the Nazis eventually implemented).
He called for a ban on mixed-race marriages, laying the groundwork the 1935 Nuremberg Laws.
He developed the 'Fischer-Scaller scale,' which outlined the physiological specifications used to determine racial origins.
He predicated the bulk of his racial science on unethical medical experiments on indigenous Africans in present-day Namibia (often maintaining their bones & skulls for scientific study).
He was complicit in the first-modern 20th Century genocide, conducted against the enslaved Herero and Namaqua tribes, interred in concentration camps (1904-1907).
He analyzed over 600 Afro-European & Gypsy children for the Nazis, measuring their skulls and taking blood samples before subsequently subjecting to forced sterilization procedures (1937-1938).
His medical experiments conducted in Namibia/Germany were appropriated for Auschwitz & other Nazi extermination camps (Mengele even sent the skulls of his Jewish/Roma victims to the Wilhelm Institute for him to further study).
He escaped being charged with war crimes after the end of WWII, mainly because of his ties to the established medical community (it was feared that the negative publicity would cause people to distrust medical institutions as a whole).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is dead.
He was a colleague of Margaret Sanger.
He received funding from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Institute.
He evidently regretted his role in the Third Reich's genocidal policies.
Efforts were made by the University of Freiburg, in 2011, to return the Namibian skulls taken by Fischer and were completed with their return in March of 2014.
