    When he was nineteen, he was caught stealing a car and given a choice by the judge of going to jail or joining the military. (He chose to join the Navy.)
    While stationed in Japan, he got a tattoo of his wife’s name – misspelled.
    He earned his ‘Old Man’ nickname while still in his 30s.
    He lost $30 grand buying diamonds that turned out to be cubic zirconia.
    He noted, ‘My role on the show is to be an old grump.’
    He was the target of an internet death hoax (2016).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to Joanne Rhue for 58 years.
    He noted about reality TV fame, ‘It’s taken some getting used to. I can’t go out to dinner unless I stop for photographs for people.’
    He was once shot in the foot by an employee showing a gun to a customer.
    According to a pre-commercial break trivia card on a 2010 episode of ‘Pawn Stars,’ he had not taken a sick day since 1994.
    He had a dry sense of humor.
