At the time, his music was considered shocking and experimental.
Many of his operas are lost to history.
After his wife died, he became a priest.

Why he might not be annoying:

'L'Orfeo' is considered the very first opera.
He single-handedly dragged music out of the Renaissance, opening the door for Bach, Beethoven, jazz, and rock and roll.
