The Resume

Why Picket Fences might be annoying:

While it was on the air, Rome rivaled Cabot Cove, Maine as the most dangerous small town in America. (And at least Jessica Fletcher never had to deal with spontaneous human combustion.)
Despite the Wisconsin setting, viewers could occasionally see the palm trees of the California town where filming actually took place.
Entertainment Weekly described its mood as ‘heartwarming creepiness.’
Kelley and Chris Carter planned for a crossover with The X-Files, but the two networks involved refused to approve it.
Despite critical acclaim, it never did well in the ratings.
The writers thought the series would be renewed for a fifth season and had to rush to tie up loose plot threads when told that season four would be the last one.

Why Picket Fences might not be annoying:

It won two consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series.
A lot of actors won Emmys for their work on the show, including series regulars Skerritt, Baker, Finkel, Walston, and Taylor-Young, and guest actors Richard Kiley and Paul Winfield.
It successfully juggled elements of police, legal, and family dramas.
Although considered a drama, many episodes worked in a good bit of humor (albeit usually of the ‘black comedy’ kind).
Douglas Wambaugh made TV Guide’s list of the 50 Greatest TV Characters (2002).
Skerritt commented, ‘We never knew what David E. Kelley was going to write one week to the next. We all looked forward to it, the crew included.’
