It went through various name changes before it settled on its current name.
The city's downtown was wiped out by a fire (October 12, 1871).
It was a hub for alcohol smuggling during the prohibition era.
It has extremely hot and humid summers.
The settlement was initially known as Little Coast, due to its location on the Detroit River.
It was the site of a gas explosion that levelled the Metropolitan Store, killing 10 people (1960).
