Originally Mary was to be a divorced woman, but the network feared audiences might think Mary Tyler Moore, who also starred in the Dick Van Dyke Show, divorced from Rob Petrie.
Ed Asner did such a horrible job at his first audition that a three-minute pilot had to be made to convince the executives to cast him as Lou Grant.
It spawned the spin-offs 'Rhoda' and 'Phyllis.'
The house where Mary Richards lived was a tourist attraction in Minneapolis until someone hung an 'Impeach Nixon' sign on one of the windows.

Why Mary Tyler Moore Show might not be annoying:

It was one of the first shows to feature a single woman not rushing to get married or have kids.
It spawned the spin-off 'Lou Grant,' one of the rare times a successful sitcom has had a successful drama spin-off.
Many of the writers and directors of this show moved on to make critically acclaimed shows like 'Taxi' and 'Cheers.'
It paved the way for other sitcoms about working women.
It was a part of one of the strongest nights of programming ever, airing along with 'All in the Family,' 'M*A*S*H,' 'The Bob Newhart Show' and 'The Carol Burnett Show.'
The opening sequence of Mary flipping her hat into the sky, has been parodied many times.
