Why Sledge Hammer! might be annoying
It was originally developed for HBO, which wanted to replace Rasche with Rodney Dangerfield or Joe Piscopo.
When ABC picked up the series, they toned down the violence and added a laugh track.
The show made lots of disparaging references to other series, especially their original lead-in, Mr. Belvedere.
Sledge's parents were Jack and Armen Hammer.
The first season ended with Sledge Hammer accidentally destroying the city while trying to disarm a nuclear warhead.
When the series was unexpectedly renewed for a second season, the first new episode started with the notice 'The following season of Sledge Hammer! takes place five years before that nuclear explosion. Thank you.'
Why Sledge Hammer! might not be annoying
It was a parody of Clint Eastwood's 'Dirty Harry' character.
Series creator Alan Spencer wrote the script for the pilot episode when he was 16.
Sledge's catchphrase, 'Trust me. I know what I'm doing' was sampled by Jesus Jones.
Sledge was not a complete male chauvinist: when Dori asked, 'You think all women should be barefoot and pregnant,' he replied, 'No, I encourage women to wear shoes.'
Rasche's real-life wife, Heather Lupton, appeared as Sledge's ex.
It was named the year's best new comedy by TV Guide.
