The Resume

    (January 12, 1956-February 22, 2012)
Born in Oyster Bay, New York
Foreign affairs correspondent for the Sunday Times
Covered conflicts in the Middle East, Chechnya, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and East Timor
Twice named Foreign Reporter of the Year at the British Press Awards (2001,2010)
Killed by a rocket as the Syrian army shelled the city of Homs

Why she might be annoying:

She married and divorced journalist Patrick Bishop twice.
Muammar Gaddafi hit on her when she interviewed him.
Ironically, her last post to her Facebook page expressed her shock at the death in Syria of reporter Anthony Shadid.
When her editor told her it was too dangerous to remain in Syria, she replied that she needed to stay another day to finish one last story.

Why she might not be annoying:

She focused on how war affected civilians, saying 'These are people who have no voice. I feel I have a moral responsibility towards them, that it would be cowardly to ignore them.'
A British Press Awards judge said of her escape over an icy mountain path from Chechnya to Georgia, 'It was one of the great adventure stories of all time. They should make it into a film.'
In East Timor, she was credited with saving 1500 women and children refugees from Indonesian forces by refusing to abandon them, shaming the United Nations into maintaining a peacekeeping force that it had planned to remove (1999).
She lost the sight in her left eye after being struck by shrapnel while covering the civil war in Sri Lanka (2001).
While recovering she said, 'The next war, I'll be more awed than ever by the quiet bravery of civilians who endure far more than I ever will.'
The Syrian army, which had threatened to kill 'any journalist who set foot on Syrian soil,' reportedly deliberately targeted the temporary media center that she and other reporters were using by honing in on satellite phone signals.
