His poetry is free verse and not rhythmic.
He was hospitalized and eventually committed suicide due to depression.
When he would write a poem about his homosexual lovers, he would change the gender to make the lover a female.

His works always showed the winning spirit of individuals.
Despite given a cushy job through his political connections in New York, he changed political affiliation to be a member of the Free Soil Party and lost his position.
Despite being scorned for his gayness, he was optimistic and was a patriot for democracy.
