    Born in Macoupin County, Illinois
    Texas cattle rancher
    With Oliver Loving established the Goodnight-Loving Trail from Texas to Wyoming (1866)
    With John Adair, founded the JA Ranch near Amarillo, Texas (1876)
    Founding member of the Panhandle Stockman's Association (1880)
    Known as the 'father of the Texas Panhandle'

Why he might be annoying:

    He never learned to read or write.
    He smoked 50 cigars a day before switching to a pipe.
    He had to sell his ranch after a disastrous investment in Mexican silver mines (1919).
    On his 91st birthday, he married his 26-year-old nurse.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to his first wife, Molly Dyer, for 55 years until her death.
    He invented the chuck wagon when he modified an army surplus Studebaker wagon for one of his cattle drives.
    He was described by a biographer as 'deeply religious and reverential by nature,' and banned gambling, whiskey and fighting among the cowboys at his ranch.
    On his ranch, he preserved one of the last native herds of bison in Texas.
    His and Loving's third cattle drive inspired the Pulitzer Prize winning novel 'Lonesome Dove.'
