Why he might be annoying:

He was nicknamed 'Ducky' for his waddling gait.
He would beat up his teammates.
He injured Tigers third baseman Marv Owen with a hard slide during Game 7 of the 1934 World Series, triggering a bench-clearing brawl and a near-riot by fans that ended only when Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis ordered Medwick benched.
He complained about how long it took for the Hall of Fame to induct him, declaring in 1963, 'The young writers, they ought to do more homework.'

He was named New Jersey 'athlete of the century.' (1999)
Marv Owen said his Game 7 slide was clean: 'Joe did what any good runner would do.'
After he was traded to the Dodgers, he got into an argument with former teammate Bob Bowman, who nailed him with a beanball, nearly killing him (1941).
During a USO tour of Europe, he met Pope Pius XII and observed, 'Your Holiness, I, too, used to be a cardinal.'
