The Resume

    (July 4, 1929-March 23, 2024)
    Resided in Maryland
Attorney (Law Office of Peter Angelos)
Purchased Baltimore Orioles (October 4, 1993)

Why he might be annoying:

He threatened to sue Major League Baseball over the relocation of the Expos to Washington.
He said, 'There are no real baseball fans in Washington.'
When bidding for the Orioles, he allegedly smirked at one point and said, 'I can bankroll anyone in here. They should just give up now because I will outbid them all.'
To many Oriole fans, he tarnished their image.
He got away from 'The Oriole Way,' which was developing minor league talent, to bring in older, high-priced free agents from other teams.
The AAA Rochester Red Wings forfeited their affiliation with the Orioles, and many insiders feel he had his fingerprints all over it.
He fired Davey Johnson in 1997, after the Orioles went wire-to-wire in first place and just five hours before Johnson won Manager of the Year.
He alienated so many people in baseball that many reputable people will not work for him.
He sued the tobacco industry on behalf of Maryland, while tobacco has been a staple of Maryland's economy for over 350 years.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is one of the top attorneys.
Due to his legal reputation, Bud Selig has been described as wanting no part of him in a courtroom, because Angelos would 'cut the used car salesman to ribbons.'
He is probably the only person the office of the Commissioner fears more than George Steinbrenner.
To keep him from suing, Selig lined his pockets with money for any potential lost revenue over the relocation of the Expos/Nationals.
One of his main motives for acquiring the Orioles was they needed local ownership.
He was one of the first attorneys in the United States to accept and litigate asbestos cases, and he has made successful recoveries for thousands of workers and their families.
He was in debt, but refused to take on any partners while he was working on the asbestos case.
He remembers unions made him rich, and sided with the players in the 1994-95 strike.
He did not come from a privileged family and worked his way through law school as a bartender.
He was valedictorian of his class at The University of Baltimore Law School.
He was an amateur boxer in his youth.
He served as a member of the board for a number of colleges, hospitals, and civic organizations and has been widely honored for his commitment to higher education and civic causes.
He was a champion of minority efforts pre-civil rights in 1964.
He has been honored by the NAACP and the Associated Black Charities of Maryland.
