    Born in Ambach, Germany
    Best known for the novel 'Perfume: The Story of a Murderer' (1985)
    Also wrote the play 'The Double Bass' (1981), and the novellas 'The Pigeon' (1988) and 'The Story of Mr. Sommer' (1991)

Why he might be annoying:

    He left college without getting a degree.
    Until the success of 'The Double Bass,' he was supported by his parents.
    He is reclusive: he has granted four interviews and there are three known photographs of him (as of 2021).
    He rejected several of the literary awards that he won.

Why he might not be annoying:

    'Perfume' spent nine years on the best-sellers list in the German magazine 'Der Spiegel.'
    'Perfume' sold 20 million copies internationally, making it the most successful German novel in decades.
    'Perfume' inspired songs by Nirvana ('Scentless Apprentice'), Rammstein ('Du riechst so gut' ['You Smell So Good']), Panic! at the Disco ('Nearly Witches'), and K-pop group VIXX ('Scientist').
