The Resume

    (October 28, 1697-April 19, 1768)
    Born in Venice, Italy
Birth name was Giovanni Antonio Canal
Known for his large-scale landscapes, especially of his native Venice

Why he might be annoying:

He was named Canaletto not for the canals in his pictures of Venice, but as a diminutive of his last name.
His nephew, Bernardo Bellotto, was also a painter and signed some of his works as Canaletto to advance his career.
A lot of his works were sold to Englishmen on grand tours of the Continent, essentially making them larger and more expensive equivalents of picture postcards.
Later in his career, his painting became repetitive and mechanical, prompting critic George Vertue to suggest that an impostor was using his name.
He had to give public painting demonstrations to refute Vertue's claims.

Why he might not be annoying:

He got his start painting scenery for Scarlatti operas.
George III, Catherine the Great and other monarchs vied to purchase his grandest paintings.
He was elected to the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts (1763).
His use of light prefigured the French Impressionists.
