Monarch

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He fell in love with his stepmother Oghul-Qaimish, whom he inherited from his father.
His taxation policies sparked a rebellion in Georgia (1259).
His cause of death is disputed: Some say that he died of cholera, some say dysentery, and others say that he was shot by an arrow while in China.

Why he might not be annoying:

His name means ‘eternal’ in the Mongolian language.
He was very infatuated with Kiev’s splendor and tried to spare it from destruction by giving it the choice to surrender, but his envoys were killed and the city was eventually sacked (1240).
Oghul-Qaimish ended up backstabbing him by refusing to acknowledge his supremacy as Great Khan, and her sons conspired against Möngke by leading the entire army from Ögedei’s faction.
The plot failed and Oghul-Qaimish was sewn into a sack and drowned into a river.
He made significant improvements on the Mongol Empire’s administration, including preventing abuses made by merchants.
He forbade the Taoists from harassing Buddhists.
He wanted to preserve the old Mongol way of life.
He was described as a fair ruler by his peers.
