Why he might be annoying:

His group's names went from The Chanteurs to The Hi-lites to Marshall and the Chi-Lites to The Chi-Lites.
He quit the group in 1976, came back in 1980 and quit again in 1988.
He attempted a solo career in the late '70s that went nowhere.
He became born again Christian and switched musical directions as a gospel singer.
His songs have been sampled by Beyoncé Knowles and Paul Wall.

Why he might not be annoying:

He wrote and produced songs for Jackie Wilson, The Dells and Barbara Acklin.
'Have You Seen Her?' and 'Oh Girl' both hit #1 on Billboard's R&B singles chart and the latter hit #1 on the pop side.
MC Hammer successfully covered 'Have You Seen Her?' in 1990 which garnered new fans (and extra royalties).
He rejoined The Chi-Lites in 2003 to film the PBS TV special 'Superstars of Seventies Soul.'
Beyoncé's smash 'Crazy in Love' (which sampled his song 'Are You My Woman?') earned him a songwriting Grammy in 2004.
