Wrote the novels 'Lie Down in Darkness' (1951), 'The Long March' (1952), 'Set This House on Fire' (1960), 'The Confessions of Nat Turner' (1967) and 'Sophie's Choice' (1979)
Wrote the memoir 'Darkness Visible' (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

He was fired as a McGraw-Hill editor for either tossing balloons out the window or for his 'slovenly appearance.'
His 'Confessions of Nat Turner' was so controversial it inspired the rebuttal 'William Styron's Nat Turner: Ten Black Writers Respond.'
He was an alcoholic.
After he stopped drinking, he had to be hospitalized for depression.
He commented, 'I suppose some of us are cursed with a dark view of life.'

His mother died from breast cancer when he was thirteen.
He served with the Marines in World War II.
He was married to poet Rose Burgunder for 53 years until his death.
His novels were both critically acclaimed and best sellers.
He received a Witness to Justice Award from the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation for 'Sophie's Choice.'
