Why he might be annoying:

He didn't like music.
He lisped.
Although his books are full of morality and religion, he was no saint.
He often cheated on his wife, and was a frequent customer at brothels.
He had an affair with a married woman, and then detailed what happened in a 'novel.'
He took cocaine.
He hated Americans.
He thought Alfred Hitchcock was a lousy director.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a spy for the British during World War II.
When he gave a bad review to a Shirley Temple film, Twentieth Century Fox sued his magazine and it folded.
When the Vatican demanded a revision of one of his novels, he refused, despite being a devout Catholic.
He wouldn't let his books be published in the Soviet Union unless it improved its human rights record.
