    Born in Brooklyn, New York
    Singer/songwriter/theater owner/impresario
    Opened Tony Pastor's Opera House in the Bowery (1865) and the New 14th Street Theater uptown (1881)
    Established touring companies of performers
    Considered one of the founding fathers of American vaudeville

Why he might be annoying:

    He began performing as a child prodigy at P.T. Barnum's Museum.
    He performed in blackface in minstrel shows.
    He preferred the term variety, calling vaudeville 'sissy and Frenchified.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He introduced audiences to Lillian Russell, Sophie Tucker and George M. Cohan.
    By eliminating alcohol and cleaning up the acts' material, he made the theater acceptable family entertainment.
    Vaudevillian Joe Laurie, Jr., said, 'He left more than money; he left a good feeling in the hearts of all the people who knew him.'
