The Resume

    Born in Oxford, United Kingdom
An informal literary group of authors (and would-be authors) associated with Oxford University that met between the early 1930's and late 1950's
Best-known members were J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (pictured)
Other prominent members included; Charles Williams, Christopher Tolkien, Warren Lewis, Adam Fox, and Lord David Cecil

Why they might be annoying:

They are only famous because of Tolkien's and Lewis' membership.
They were all male. (Dorothy L. Sayers is sometimes said to have been a member, but she never attended any of their meetings.)
Although some members were seriously underage, they smoked and drank during their meetings.
They met without Oxford's knowledge or approval.
After over twenty years of existence, their meetings just petered out.

Why they might not be annoying:

    They were really, really smart.
They met at a pub, The Eagle and Chicken (which still exists), to drink beer and discuss each other's work or in each other's dorm rooms.
Tolkien read 'The Lord of the Rings' as a work-in-progress at meetings of the group.
They had no real rules about membership, dues, or anything else.
They were all very talented, and in Tolkien and Lewis counted the two greatest British writers of the Twentieth Century in among their numbers.
They were all Christians, and C.S. Lewis is considered by many to be the greatest Christian writer of the Twentieth Century.
