    He initially planned to attend Georgia Tech University, but backed out after being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the baseball draft.
    Despite being a local prospect in the Braves system, the team traded him to St. Louis in the J. D. Drew trade.
    He initially objected to the trade that sent him to St. Louis.
    He is the second pitcher in baseball history to not win the Cy Young award despite receiving the most first place votes.
    His middle name is Parrish.

    He started out in the Cards bullpen and was pressed into the team's closer role after incumbent Jason Isringhausen went down with injury.
    He earned a World Series ring in his first full major league season (2006).
    Following his success in relief duty, he was promoted to the starting rotation in his second full season.
    He posted a career high 19 wins (2009).
    He grew up an Atlanta Braves fan, and was happy when he was drafted by the team in the first round of the 2000 baseball draft.
