Vocalist

The Resume

    (July 20, 1944- )
    Born in Humboldt, Tennessee
Birth name was William Neal Browder
Recorded the #1 country singles ‘Devil in the Bottle’ (1974), ‘Trying to Beat the Morning Home’ (1975), ‘Last Cheater’s Waltz’ (1979), ‘I’ll Be Coming Back for More’ (1979), ‘Do You Wanna Go To Heaven’ (1980), ‘I Feel Like Loving You Again’ (1980), ‘I Loved ‘Em Every One’ (1981), ‘Party Time’(1981), ‘Only One You’ (1981), ‘Finally’ (1982), ‘War Is Hell (On the Homefront Too)’ (1982), ‘Faking Love’ (with Karen Brooks, 1982), ‘Slow Burn’ (1983) and ‘Strong Heart’ (1986)

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of high school at age fifteen.
He recorded under a pseudonym because he was working in the promotions department of RCA Records when he was signed as a singer by a rival label (Motown’s country division, Melodyland), and did not want to risk his job with RCA (at least not until he had a couple of hit singles under his belt).
His stage name is not a reference to ‘The Good Shepherd’ – or anything else, for that matter: ‘A lot of people through the years have had fun putting what they want the initials to stand for, but they really don’t mean anything, they are just initials.’
His official website declares ’21 #1 Hits,’ apparently having decided that his actual total of 14 was insufficiently impressive.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a promotions man at RCA, he helped turn ‘These Eyes’ by the Guess Who, ‘Light My Fire’ by Jose Feliciano, ‘The Letter’ by the Box Tops, and ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ by John Denver into hits.
Elvis Presley gave him a touring bus, partly to encourage his career, partly as thanks for introducing the King to Linda Thompson.
Cash Box named him best new male vocalist (1976).
He was one of the original investors in Guitars & Cadillacs (the country music answer to the Hard Rock Café).
