Why he might be annoying
He refused to re-read his novels: 'As soon as I finish a novel and ship it to the publisher, I almost immediately lose interest in it.'
After his mother read the first hundred pages of 'The Last Picture Show,' she hid the book in a closet because of its profane language and sexual scenes (including one of teenage boys performing an unnatural act on a cow).
He was fond of wearing a t-shirt reading 'Minor Regional Novelist.'
He shares a house with his wife and his screenwriting partner, Diana Ossana.
He wore cowboy boots, jeans, and an Armani jacket to the Oscars (2006).
Why he might not be annoying
He used to run a used book store, Booked Up, which was one of the largest in the country, carrying over 400,000 titles at its peak.
He won a Pulitzer Prize for 'Lonesome Dove.'
He won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Adapted Screenplay for 'Brokeback Mountain.'
In his Oscar acceptance speech, he reminded the audience that 'Brokeback' was originally a story by E. Annie Proulx.
A UCLA literature professor said,, 'Lonesome Dove is the only long novel in my whole career that students were happy to read.'
